No rain, no flats, no meltdowns. Huge success of a day 😁
Ahoj from Bohemia, aka Czechia. I crossed the border at about 12.
The difference was nearly instant and pretty dramatic. Czechia is decidedly less polished. More rust, potholes, hollowed out buildings and Suzukis, fewer Audis, coiffed cyclists and quaint little villages. Which is not so surprising. Germany is the biggest economy in Europe, if I’m not mistaken. And Czechia was released from the soviets to fend for itself.
No lack of beautiful old buildings too.
The Elbe trail was nicer today on both sides of the border. Mostly riverside riding with stone escarpments on either side. Some of the most beautiful nature I’ve seen so far, in fact.
Pretty much as soon as I crossed the border I started seeing trail side signs for ‘cyklo kemp’, presumably a campground for cyclists. As a matter of principle, I generally avoid such aggressive advertising. But reading some reviews of my other options, well, they weren’t exactly glowing. And this campground was perfectly placed. So I figured I’d try it. Might be nice to hang out with a bunch of other cyclists anyway since it’s been a few days since I’ve interacted with pretty much anyone.
I pull up to a place that says campground in about the spot cyklo should be. However, there are no tents, no people, pretty much nothing except a few cabins in various stages of completion. There’s a guy at a desk so I ask if there is camping. He says yes, anywhere you’d like. I’m thinking this is weird but pay and set up camp.
Google maps tells me the place I’m looking for is a few hundred meters further on. I feel like an idiot and wonder if the guy I paid for this site got beer money for tonight 😉 (not really, it’s legit). Anyway. to see what I missed out in I walk over to the other place. It’s no different than this one except it has 2 tents instead of just one (mine).
Still, I have no freakin idea what this place is. There are a bunch of tweens and teens running around the half built houses, mostly girls. And I’ve yet to see an adult in the 2 hours I’ve been here. Could be a long night.
Tomorrow is the LAST day the forecast suggests rain. I hope this is true. I am 50 km north of Prague, 80 as the river flows. So I should arrive mid afternoon. There is a campground a short ferry ride from the town center where I plan to stay for 2 nights.
A camp for two consecutive nights- it’ll feel like home. Hoping it’s not a long night.
No kidding. I’m wondering if it’s ok to leave all my stuff in my tent while I go to town for a day.
You were long overdue for a good day. Glad you got it. Love the photos (again). I think it’s safe to say none of the Mohr boys would be walking across the bridge at the top of that peak unless you can close your eyes and walk across. I would wonder about leaving your stuff at the campground….I’d be a little hesitant. Enjoy the rest of your day. the ride into Prague, and two nights in the same campground. Maybe you should splurge for a hotel room.
I wonder if you can hide your gear somewhere?
Or are there community lockers to store it in?
Yay! I was finally able to log in. Love seeing your posts each day – but most of all I am so glad today was a better day for you. The photos are so great Chad. Feels like you are taking us away and giving us a little break from the day to day here – thank you! Sleep well (hope the teens aren’t too loud and more campers show up) and enjoy tomorrow.
Glad you made it in!
You’re right about the beautiful nature shots, these are by far the best so far. A much more rugged landscape it seems. I was hoping to hear about some food – dumplings and fried cheese and all that. Looking forward to hearing about Prague and seeing the sights through your photos, happy you are staying a couple of nights! And that you got a good weather day!
Interesting the instant difference when you crossed the Border.
Thanks for more interesting pictures of new areas.
Sunny days ahead.
Absolutely gorgeous scenery today, Chad!
You manage to find adventure and ambiguity in some form nearly every day. The only monotony is the rain? Hope you enjoy the time in Prague. I’ve heard from many that it’s the most beautiful city in Europe
