97 miles + 2 bonus miles for Jeremy as a reward for leaving my phone at the top of a hill. That’s 156 km.
Elevation is tough to say. 6000 feet for sure and likely more, particularly due to some costly missed turns. I’ll blame Jeremy again.
12 hours on the road, half of that in the rain.
I have spent the last few months stressed out about the attached elevation profile of today’s ride. I thought it would be brutal work and that I’d end up tossing my bike off the mountain and calling it quits.
Turns out it wasn’t so bad. Could be the expectation of hell that made it rather pleasant. Could be that the elevation profile is wrong in its specifics. Probably both are true.
The early part of the day was the real challenge. Leaving silver falls we spent 7 miles on a very rough ‘gravel’ road with some rocks the size of grapefruits. There was some pushing involved at that point.
Even the rain wasn’t soooo bad until it started getting cold (we could see our breath) towards the end of the day. After a much deserved 5 mile downhill we may as well have stuffed our shoes and gloves with ice. Brrrrr. We were both shivering so bad we worried about losing control of the bikes.
Anyway, our cabin is great and Liz had it stocked with some groceries for us which is extremely appreciated. I do not think an hour went by today that we didn’t eat, and we still had a giant pasta dinner.
Breezy 40 mile ride to Bend tomorrow with a strategically placed bakery about 1/3 of the way there.
