The shuttle bus dumped me of at 7pm on hwy 101 in the south end of Crescent City. Foggy, clammy and not warm.
Knowing there was a big hill and needing a campsite to stay in I rode 10 miles south. The first 2 were flat. The next 6 very very steep and the final 2 very steep downwards. Of course the final 2 were just to get to the campground so I got to climb those miles out at 8:30 this morning. A new record low speed of 6 kph.
Mill creek campground was great (besides the climb out). It was the first time I stayed in a $5 hiker / biker spot. I shared a campground with Martin, a Columbian who had been in Minneapolis for 3 months learning English and who is riding from Seattle to San Francisco before he goes home.
My ride so far today has been amazing. There has been a bit of riding along the coast but it is very foggy there. Which may be a good thing. I know on a big downhill this morning I was riding the edge of a cliff a few hundred feet up that I couldn’t see. But mostly I have ridden though some incredible redwood forest. Amazing.
So it seems like service may be spottier than I expected. We will see. But if you can’t track me or if you don’t hear from me assume it is that.
Not sure how far I will go today. The last decent and cheap campground is at clam beach but I’d like to make it further. I’ll keep in touch if I can.
